Applicant Requirements for Focused Practice Designation (FPD) through ABEM

Only ABEM-certified physicians may sit for the ABEM Advanced Emergency Medicine Ultrasonography FPD.

Any physician, M.D. or D.O., who is ABEM-certified, is considered eligible for the FPD. Physicians who are AOBEM-certified are not able to seek the FPD recognition.


Eligibility Categories

Visit the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) website to stay up to date on the different eligibility pathways and deadlines to apply for the Focused Practice Designation (FPD).

Non-fellowship Trained (Practice-Only Pathway)

Physicians who are ABEM-certified but who never completed an ultrasound fellowship have a short window to sit for certification through ABEM. This includes older physicians who trained before fellowships were available and physicians who self trained more recently. Dates for this window will be published when decided.

Physicians who completed any non-ultrasound fellowship who had significant ultrasound training may be eligible to sit for ABEM Advanced Emergency Medicine Ultrasonography FPD if they are ABEM-certified. This includes physicians who trained at ultrasound research fellowships, international fellowships or disaster fellowships at programs with emergency ultrasound fellowships, or pediatric emergency ultrasound fellowships with significant ultrasound experience. The applicant must be an ABEM diplomate to sit for FPD exam. Dates for this window will be published when decided.

Fellowship Graduate from EUFAC-Accredited Fellowship

Physicians who completed a EUFAC-accredited fellowship are eligible to sit for ABEM Advanced Emergency Medicine Ultrasonography FPD if they are ABEM-certified. The applicant must be an ABEM diplomate to sit for FPD exam.

Fellowship Graduate from non-EUFAC-Accredited Ultrasound Fellowship (Training-Plus-Practice Pathway)

Physicians who completed an ultrasound fellowship that is not EUFAC-accredited have a short window to sit for recognition through ABEM. This includes physicians who trained at fellowships listed on EUSFellowships.com that are not EUFAC-accredited, or other ultrasound fellowships. The applicant must be an ABEM diplomate to sit for FPD exam. Dates for this window will be published when decided.
